SDFDR Diversity and Inclusion Travel Award (DITA)

Award Information

The Scientific Director’s Fellowship for Diversity in Research (SDFDR) Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse Intramural Research Program (NIDA IRP) will support four travel awards to IRTAs who are (1) presenting research and (2) promoting institutional diversity and inclusion efforts at one of the following meetings:

  • Society for Neuroscience (SfN)
  • Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS)
  • Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)

Other conferences or meetings may be considered with a written explanation describing how the proposed conference or meeting will enhance the trainee’s professional academic or career development and NIDA IRP’s diversity and inclusion efforts. Please note that international conferences and meetings are not eligible.

Awardees are selected on a competitive basis. Up to four travel awards per year (each up to $1,500) are available to support NIDA IRP IRTA trainees (Postbaccalaureate, Predoctoral, Postdoctoral or Visiting Fellows). The use of these travel funds will follow all NIDA IRP and NIH travel rules and regulations. Meeting registration should not be entered into POTs until the award is granted. Furthermore, awardees will be expected to participate at an SDFDR Meeting to discuss the work presented and their experience(s) at the meeting.

Deadlines

Applications open on October 1st and close on February 28th each year.

  • Applications will be due on February 28th at midnight.
  • Applications will be reviewed by the NIDA IRP’s Diversity & Inclusion team.
  • Announcements to awardees will be sent on or before: May 1st. 

Eligibility

  • All current NIDA IRP IRTA Postbaccalaureate, Predoctoral, Postdoctoral and Visiting Fellows may apply. Please note that student IRTAs are not eligible.
  • Awardees must be working at NIDA IRP at the time of meeting attendance; we cannot reimburse travel costs once a trainee separates from the IRP.
  • IRTAs who identify as underserved, including SDFDR Fellows, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Examples include:

  • Trainees with disabilities
  • Trainees who come from an economically disadvantaged background (e.g., Pell Grant-eligible, from environments that inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skill, and ability required to enroll in, and graduate from, a health professional school, or from a family with an annual income below low-income thresholds)
  • Trainees who are or have been enrolled in Tribal Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
  • Trainees who are the first in their family to attend college
  • Trainees who identify as LGBTQ
  • Trainees that have been affected by circumstances that negatively impacted their educational opportunities, including recent natural disasters
  • Previous awardees are eligible to apply again.
