NIH Library Resources

The NIH Library provides many services that may help you with your research. The library has an extensive biomedical collection, much of which may be accessed online. You can download articles, order articles not available in the library’s collection, borrow books that can be delivered to you in Baltimore, browse through hundreds of online books and reference materials, and search online databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and SciFinder. The library’s webpage is available at https://nihlibrary.nih.gov/agency/nih

Online Catalog

Use https://onesearch.nihlibrary.ors.nih.gov/discovery/search?vid=01NIH_INST:NIH&sortby=rank to see the library’s complete list of holdings. You can search by keyword, title, author, or subject.

Online Journals

Choose the “Journals” link in the “Resources” section of the library’s homepage to obtain free access to thousands of journals. There are a few titles that are not available outside of the main campus, but these items may be requested via interlibrary loan. There is no charge to you or to your section to read or download journal articles, but copyright laws regarding sharing materials outside of NIH should be followed.

Requesting Interlibrary Loan or Books

You can order articles on interlibrary loan or have books sent to you from the library by using the order form at  https://nih.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/ You’ll need to register the first time you use the system; follow the prompts to get started and you’ll be able to order immediately. If you’ve found an item through the catalog, all of the identifying information (title, author, call number) will transfer automatically to the form. You can also enter information manually for any item not listed in the catalog.

PubMed @ NIH:

Login to PubMed through the library’s homepage at  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?otool=nihlib before starting your search. NIH’s version of PubMed will retrieve the same exact results as any other PubMed session, but you will be able to download and/or order articles directly from the library. When you have found an article on PubMed that you’d like to see, look for the NIH icon in the upper right corner of the citation page. You’ll see links to the full text or the library’s document delivery system there; these features are available only through the NIH version of the database.

Online Guides and Tutorials: You can find online tutorials that will help you learn how to search databases, set up EndNote reference software, and use personalized features for your accounts at https://nihlibrary.nih.gov/training/online-tutorials The Library’s reference desk is available by phone  (301-496-1080) or online  at https://nihlibrary.nih.gov/services/ask-question

If you have questions, please feel free to ask me or contact the NIH Library directly.
