Thank you for visiting the NIDA Intramural Research Program Animal Care and Use Program website. The Animal Care and Use Program consists of the Animal Program Director, veterinary, technical/animal husbandry staff, Program Coordinator, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC).
Mission
It is the goal of the Animal Care and Use Program to ensure that all animal research conducted at NIDA complies with NIH policy and all appropriate federal guidelines and policies. In order to accomplish this goal, the Program utilizes the following:
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC)
The ACUC is responsible for the review and approval of all animal research protocols submitted by investigators at NIDA. In addition, the ACUC performs regular inspections of all animal housing and research facilities, reviews protocol compliance following approval, and reviews and approves policies and guidelines for the conduct of research and animal care within the Intramural Research Program. The ACUC reviews and investigates any animal welfare concerns and is empowered to suspend animal research that fails to comply with or violates applicable guidelines.

The Animal Program is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC).
