Lorenzo Leggio, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Lorenzo Leggio is Chief of the Translational Addiction Medicine Branch and Acting Clinical Director. His clinical research focuses on the treatment of alcohol and substance use disorders, with an emphasis on the role of microbiome-gut-liver-brain and neuroendocrine pathways. He also investigates the medical consequences of alcohol use disorder, with a focus on alcohol-associated liver disease. Dr. Leggio obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Catholic University of Rome and is board certified in internal medicine.
About This Talk
Dr. Leggio will cover the epidemiology of alcohol as a leading cause of preventable death and disease. Alcohol use disorder is responsible for several medical (e.g., liver and cardiovascular disease) and psychosocial (e.g., impairment, loss of job) consequences. He will also discuss current medications and behavioral treatments used to help people reduce or stop alcohol use.
