As a summer intern, you likely fall into one of these groups:
- NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Biomedical Research
- Recruitment and Training Program for Under-represented Populations (RTPUP)
- Special Volunteer (unpaid internship)
Once you arrive at NIDA, you are part of one big summer program. All seminars and workshops are open to all students, regardless of your program.
Your summer experience begins with several days of orientation, during which you get your NIH badge and hear about the learning opportunities available over the summer. We offer lectures and workshops on the following topics:
- Seminars highlighting the range of research conducted at NIDA
- Major neurotrasmitter systems
- Choosing and applying to graduate school
- Writing personal statements for graduate school
- Preparing for the GRE
- Choosing and applying to medical school
- Preparing for the MCAT
- Preparing and presenting a scientific poster
- Giving an oral presentation
Most of your time will be spent working with a scientist on a research project. In early August, at the end of the internship, you will have the opportunity to present your research findings in the form of a poster. There will be two Poster Days, one in Baltimore and one in Bethesda.
