Programa Posdoctoral
The NIDA Intramural Research Program (IRP) offers postdoctoral scientists the opportunity to conduct intensive, full-time research in a collaborative NIH environment focused on substance use, addiction, neuroscience, behavior, and related areas of health. Postdoctoral fellows work within research groups led by NIDA investigators and develop the scientific, technical, professional, and career skills needed for their next stage of training and employment.
In addition to their research, postdoctoral fellows can participate in career and professional development, scientific communication, research presentation, mentoring, networking, and advising opportunities offered through NIDA’s Office of Education and Career Development (OECD) and the NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE).
Postdoctoral fellows at NIDA can benefit from:
- Intensive mentored research within the NIH Intramural Research Program.
- Access to interdisciplinary basic, translational, behavioral, and clinical research environments.
- Opportunities to present research and strengthen scientific communication skills.
- Career exploration and professional development programming.
- Mentoring and trainee-development resources through OECD and NIH OITE.
- Networking with scientists and trainees across NIDA, NIH, and the broader biomedical research community.
Eligibility and Appointment Information
Eligibility requirements and appointment policies are established by NIH and may change over time. Prospective applicants should review the official NIH OITE Postdoc Fellows page for current eligibility requirements, stipend and benefits information, appointment conditions, and guidance for international fellows.

How to Find a Postdoctoral Position at NIDA
Postdoctoral positions at NIH are filled directly by individual Principal Investigators. There is no centralized NIH postdoctoral application portal. Applicants should identify NIDA investigators whose research aligns with their scientific interests and contact those investigators directly. Postdoctoral vacancies may also be advertised through the NIH OITE Jobs Board.
When contacting a prospective NIDA mentor, applicants should consider including:
- A concise introduction describing their research background and career interests.
- A personalized explanation of why the investigator’s research program is a strong fit.
- A current curriculum vitae.
- Names and contact information for references, as requested by the investigator.
- An anticipated timeline for beginning postdoctoral training.
Research and Professional Development Opportunities
OECD supplements the research experience with programs designed to help postdoctoral fellows communicate their science, explore career pathways, strengthen mentoring relationships, and prepare for future positions.
- Fellows/Postdoctoral Research Showcase and other research presentation opportunities.
- NIDA Poster Day and Mentoring Awards.
- Baltimore Fellows Symposium and FARE-related presentation opportunities.
- Career Exploration and professional development programs.
- Mentoring workshops and resources for trainees and mentors.
- NIH OITE career advising, professional development, well-being, and resilience programming.
- NIH-wide scientific and networking opportunities, including the Fellows Committee (FelCom).
