The NIDA Intramural Research Program (IRP) participates in the NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP), which provides students with an intensive, full-time research experience within the NIH Intramural Research Program. Summer interns at NIDA work alongside scientists conducting basic, behavioral, translational, and clinical research related to substance use, addiction, and related areas of neuroscience and health.
Interns become members of a NIDA research group and work under the guidance of an NIH investigator and research team. In addition to hands-on research experience, interns have opportunities to participate in scientific seminars, professional development activities, career exploration programs, and research presentation opportunities.
What to Expect
Throughout the summer, interns may participate in:
- Hands-on research under the guidance of NIDA scientists
- Scientific seminars and research presentations
- Career and professional development programming
- Networking opportunities with trainees and scientists
- NIH-wide summer programming through the Office of Intramural Training & Education
- Opportunities to present their research at the end of the summer
The NIH SIP program currently includes professional development, educational and career programming, well-being resources, a Graduate and Professional School Fair, and an NIH Summer Poster Day.
Eligibility and Application
Eligibility, application requirements, deadlines, stipend information, and application iinstructions are established by NIH OITE and may change from year to year.

Finding a Research Mentor at NIDA
Applicants interested in conducting summer research at NIDA are encouraged to explore the NIDA Intramural Research Program’s laboratories, research branches, and investigators to identify research areas that align with their interests.
When contacting an investigator, applicants should briefly introduce themselves, describe their research interests and relevant experience, and explain why they are interested in the investigator’s work.
