Summary
Researchers analyzed brain imaging data from nearly 10,000 children and adolescents to examine how white matter—the brain’s communication pathways—develops around adolescence. They found that children whose white matter pathways involved in attention, language, and higher-level cognition appeared more advanced development for their age generally had stronger cognitive abilities and fewer attention and behavioral problems.
These differences in white matter development were also linked to outcomes several years later. More advanced development was associated with better school grade, math skills, and attention, whereas less advanced development in key pathways was associated with a greater likelihood of later psychiatric diagnoses.
The findings do not mean that a brain scan can predict whether an individual child will develop a mental health condition. Instead, they suggest that white matter development during the years leading into adolescence may be an important part of both cognitive development and vulnerability to mental health problems—and could eventually help researchers identify opportunities for earlier support.
