Alex Hoffman, Ph.D.
Dr. Alex Hoffman is a Staff Scientist in the Electrophysiology Section. He investigates the cellular actions of cannabinoids and other drugs by recording from living brain tissue to examine the effects of these drugs on chemical signaling between nerve cells. He also serves as the Chair of the Animal Care and Use Committee, which provides oversight of animal use in research. Dr. Hoffman earned his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado studying animal models of Parkinson’s Disease.
About This Talk
Nerve cells (neurons) are electrically excitable cells that communicate with one another to control all behavior. Dr. Hoffman will give an overview of how scientists record from neurons using small sensors or electrodes that can be implanted in living brain tissue. He will also discuss how “listening in” to neuronal communication allows us to understand how and where drugs act in the brain.
