Research Interests
Peter’s research program aims to understand psychological functioning and behavior, specifically substance use behavior, at the individual level. His work primarily has falls into three broad categories: 1) advancing person-specific quantitative and qualitative methods for understanding and predicting in-the-moment substance use; 2) understanding how researchers, clinicians, and participants/patients respond to intensive ecological data collection; and 3) leveraging input from community partners to improve the study of substance use. Ultimately, by understanding better the person-specific timing, location, and biopsychosocial predictors of occasions of substance use – as well as tailoring data collection and analytic procedures to the needs of practitioners and patients – data-driven, personalized, adaptive interventions will improve the effectiveness of the supports available to people in reaching their substance use goals.
