Shannon Speed, Ph.D., M.S., M.P.A., CHES

Research Interests

Dr. Shannon Speed received her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Public Health and Education from the Miami University in the Summer of 2022 and joined the CPN laboratory in August 2022. She comes to the NIH with four years of teaching and mentorship experience in higher education. Her research has a broad focus in alcohol and substance use, with a specialization on drunkorexia and associated alcohol consequences. In her doctoral work, she cultivated skills in measurement development to assess and interpret specific drunkorexia behaviors (restriction, excessive exercise, and purging) from the Theory of Planned Behavior perspective. Dr. Speed’s additional work includes exploring drunkorexia as it relates to self-identified gender, mindfulness, and alcohol related consequences. As a new Post-Doctoral Fellow in Dr. Leggio’s laboratory, Dr. Speed is working with data from bariatric patients to explore potential ramifications of weight loss surgeries and substance use disorders, with the hope of also expanding drunkorexia research outside of the college student population.
